"LHermetia illucens" is the scientific name for the "black soldier fly."
The original black soldier fly comes from the tropical and subtropical areas of North and South America, but today it is almost present in all warm regions of the globe.
This is the result of the global trade in fruits and vegetables with which flies travel.
In Europe, the fly lives in the wild in Spain, Portugal, Italy and the south of France. In Belgium, the black soldier fly cannot survive the winter and that is why it is not found in the wild.
